About

Dr Brendan Cronin FRANZCO is a Brisbane ophthalmologist specialising in corneal, cataract and refractive surgery at the Queensland Eye Institute, where he is Director of Education, and at Focus Vision. Fellowship-trained in corneal surgery in Manchester, UK, he is a Founding Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences and has performed more than 15,000 eye procedures. Brendan is best known internationally for his keratoconus work. Among the first surgeons in Australia to perform CAIRS (corneal allogenic intrastromal ring segments), he co-authored the Brisbane Nomogram for CAIRS planning, co-developed the global planning platform cairsplan.com, trains surgeons around the world in the technique, and led the campaign that saw Medicare recognise CAIRS as a keratoplasty. His cross-linking practice is equally at the leading edge: he was Australia’s first surgeon to offer Glaukos Epioxa epi-on cross-linking, one of only 14 surgeons worldwide given early access to Mosaic topography-guided cross-linking, and co-author of the 2024 JCRS study in which 60% of patients improved their best corrected vision. The author of more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and principal investigator on numerous clinical trials, Brendan lectures regularly at international meetings. He works closely with optometrists and values shared care, and his CPD teaching focuses on the practical: recognising the early keratoconic map, knowing when to refer for cross-linking, and co-managing corneal patients with confidence.
